These toile fabric panels are original "palempores" with the depiction of a tree of life tree.
The word "palempore" is derived from "palangposh" which means veil or curtain in
Hindi.
Since the second half of the 17th century these toile fabric painted fabrics were brought by the
merchants of the VOC, mostly as a special order, from India's Coromandel coast to
The Netherlands.
The tree with his craggy branches is a model for the source of life; the leaves,
flowers, fruit and birds are symbols of fertility.
The toile fabric panels were used in the interior of houses for decoration, but also as a quilt
on the bed. For that purpose the toile fabrics were lined and quilted.
The here depicted "palempores" were exactly copied during the 19th century in France.
